Cornflower is a member of daisy family renowned for its vibrant blue flowers. A magnificent wild plant with a clear blue flower, cornflower naturally grows in acidic garden soil, grain fields and mountainous ranges in our areas. Its flowers, both delicate and airy, make the landscape feel pristine. Several varieties exist (purple blue, red, pink), and the blooming of cornflower is very abundant, especially in summer. This plant native to the Middle East is known for its medicinal, culinary and cosmetic properties.

Dried cornflower petals are often used to make medicine. People take cornflower tea to treat fever, constipation, water retention, and chest congestion. They also take it as a tonic, bitter, and liver and gallbladder stimulant.

In addition to containing essential nutrients that include biotin (vitamin B7) and calcium, the flower buds also include other active compounds:

  • Anthocyanins: Protocyanin, flavones.
  • Antioxidants: Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), folate.
  • Benzopyrone: Coumarin.
  • Polyacetylenes: Cuprene.
  • Polyphenols: Tannin.
  • Sesquiterpene lactones: Cnicin.

The plant’s medicinal value lies primarily in its anti-inflammatory properties. Taken internally as an herbal tea, it is thought to aid in soothing stomach ulcers, while rinsing with the tea is used to speed the healing of sores or bleeding gums in the mouth.

The tea can also be good for improving digestion, and the herb’s high antioxidant content aids in detoxifying the liver.

Besides having medicinal properties, dried cornflowers are used in the beauty industry to make colorful herbal soaps and herbal bath salt bombs. Cornflower petals are added to tea blends, potpourri, baked goods, soups, salads and custards, or are frozen in decorative ice cubes for iced beverages.
